A powerhouse for culture and art in Scotland

National Galleries Scotland

Our national and international reputation for quality acquisitions, research, exhibitions and partnerships ensured a record number of 2.5m visitors to our Galleries in Edinburgh and we are determined to push forward with developing our offer and extending our reach to even wider audiences.

Our Purpose

PRESERVE. EXHIBIT. EDUCATE.
  • Care for, preserve and add to the objects in our collections

  • Ensure that the objects are exhibited to the public

  • Ensure that the objects are available to persons seeking to inspect them in connection with study or research; and generally to promote the public’s enjoyment and understanding of the Fine Arts

  • Provide education, instruction and advice and to carry out research

The National Galleries of Scotland look after one of the world’s finest collections of Western art ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day.

"We are in a period of significant transitional change.

There has been rationalisation and restructuring of resource and realignment of budgets which is enabling significant progress in many areas.
The galleries have brought in new blood to key positions recently which is now moving the galleries forward at an exciting pace."

STRATEGY

To achieve our vision, OUR online presence has been broadened significantly with the launch of a new collection website and we are on target to digitize the entire collection by 2020.

We have two major capital projects; the redevelopment of the Scottish National Gallery with a suite of brand new spaces to house the world’s most important collection of Scottish art and the organisation is also developing plans for a major new facility in north Edinburgh which will be a new centre for conserving, researching and distributing the collection.
